From Football to Recruitment: Data Analysis is the Key to Success

I have a love for the written word. And I especially appreciate texts that can be read almost exactly as they are, with just a few words swapped, and suddenly they apply to a completely different field—yet remain just as true, if not more so.
– Ragnhild Geirsdatter Nordvik, COO

At Frantz, we have previously used football as a metaphor to explain what we do: There is only one goal scorer, but the other players are just as crucial in ensuring that the ball reaches the one who delivers the final touch. The same applies to applications: They originate from one medium/channel, but someone must capture the candidate’s interest and guide them in the right direction toward a final application.

NRK’s football writer Thore Haugstad published this article just before the turn of the year, and suddenly, we have a new football reference where the value of data is explained in the world of football. I recommend reading the entire text, but put on your recruitment glasses: Replace the word football with recruitment, player with candidate, owners with recruiter, and so on.

We must understand the value of statistics and acknowledge that, as humans, we do not have the ability or capacity to conduct objective analyses anywhere near the level that machines can assist us with. Human intuition (read: gut feeling and assumptions) often turns into biases that hinder us from making the right and best decisions.

“(…) because data analysis is here to stay. It’s high time United wakes up.”
– Thore Haugstad, NRK’s football writer

It’s about time that employers and hiring managers also wake up and start using data analysis in recruitment.

See you for data-driven candidate searches in the new year! 🙂
